Designing and Studying Visualization for Multicultural Audiences
Description:
This meetup brings together researchers and practitioners to discuss two connected challenges: (1) how to design visualizations that work well across multicultural audiences, and (2) how to make the research process itself reflect that diversity — from recruiting participants beyond convenience samples to adapting study designs, instruments, and methods across cultural, linguistic, and other contexts. Visualizations today reach an increasingly wide range of audiences. Practitioners create for people with different backgrounds, languages, and (visual) literacy levels—all of which shape how they experience and interpret visualizations. In parallel, empirical investigations in visualization research rely on evaluating visualizations with participants, who are themselves culturally diverse, raising questions like: What counts as a "conventional" participant? How to account for cultural and linguistic differences in visualization design and empirical investigations? How transferable are our methods and results across different cultural contexts? The meetup will follow an open meeting/round table format. Participants will share their experiences in working with and for multicultural audiences. For example, designers will discuss how they adapt charts for different cultural audiences and the guidelines they follow, while researchers could share their experiences running cross-cultural studies, recruitment strategies, and study designs. Prospective audience: Vis researchers and practitioners interested in cross-cultural design or research methods.
