SciVis Meetup: Building a Collaborative Catalog of Scientific Visualizations and Datasets
Description:
Scientific visualizations (SciVis) and their underlying datasets are stored across repositories, project websites, and personal storage systems, often with inconsistent formats and metadata. This fragmentation hinders efficient discovery and reuse. Valuable resources may therefore be overlooked, along with essential information about their provenance, scientific context, and prior uses. This meetup will bring together researchers, practitioners, educators, and students to gather perspectives to inform the creation of a community-driven catalog, which will serve as a central directory pointing to SciVis datasets and their associated images, wherever they are hosted. We invite participants to share relevant experiences and identify core metadata and potential uses. Topics may include data provenance and formats, visual metaphors and visualization parameters, software and programming-language preferences, and applications such as multimodal search, recommendation, captioning, and model training. Through small-group activities and collective discussion, we will identify practical features and outline next steps toward a sustainable catalog. The meetup is open to anyone interested in improving access to and reuse of SciVis resources; no specialized experience is required. An opt-in group may continue to prototype the catalog and develop the meetup’s outcomes into a white paper or position paper, potentially beginning with an arXiv preprint. Prospective audience: Researchers, students, educators, and any attendees interested in scientific visualization and open data.
